Architecture for co-operative telecommunications network and advanced services management in heterogeneous environments based on societies of agents.

The main goal of this project is to provide a flexible, robust, scalable and open solution to the problem of management, co-ordination and integration in open environments in order to assure satisfactory performance and reliability levels, an area of utmost importance for telecommunications networks, distributed systems and advanced information and communication services. These environments are characterised by the co-existence of a wide range of technologies, services and contents, which are managed by a host of network operators, services providers and end users.

For this purpose, this research group proposes to further examine the benefits arising from the use of technology based on autonomous, flexible, proactive, intelligent and mobile agent societies in the context of telecommunications, distributed systems and advanced information and communication services management in Internet environments. Their suitability for dealing with the complexity, heterogeneity, dynamism, uncertainty and possibility of failure inherent to this environment will be analysed, as will the existence of conflicting interests arising from the need for the integration of different network operators, services providers and end users.

Its practical goals are to design and validate an innovative open management architecture, based on the techniques of distributed control, dynamic functionality delegation and intelligent mobile agents systems, which are an aid for the process of creating new software for defining and integrating telecommunications services and network management. The architecture includes a new model of co-ordination and negotiation in heterogeneous environments that will make it possible to move away from the centralised and hierarchical/distributed management paradigms to a new co-operative paradigm based on intelligent agents. This architecture will be the framework upon which to develop an open management platform that provides the necessary infrastructure for building flexible solutions for network management and services integration, capable of dynamically adapting to changes in the technological environment, new services and new management needs.

A management system for multi-service IP networks in heterogeneous and broadband environments will be developed on this infrastructure. This system will undertake the management and integration of a dynamic Virtual Private Networks (VPN) management service and provide service quality to different traffic flows by means of DiffServ (Differentiated Services –RFC2475). The techniques of distributed control and dynamic functionality delegation based on mobile agents will make it possible to equip the multi-service IP networks with dynamically programmable functionality, providing scalable management, and with a high self-configuration component thanks to the autonomy and intelligence characteristic of the agents paradigm.

During the development of this project, the need to consolidate the intelligent agents and, particularly, the agent-oriented programming paradigm from the viewpoint of software engineering will be addressed. Therefore, the work group proposes to advance with this project towards the specification of a methodology for agent-oriented software development in Internet environments.
