Short Biography

Fernando Alonso received a BEng in Industrial Engineering in 1970 and a BSc in Computing in 1972, both from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), Spain. Alonso earned his PhD in Computing from the UPM in 1985, and his PhD dissertation merited the distinction of university prize. Alonso's major field of study is software development in the fields of software engineering and knowledge engineering and e-learning. He is full professor of computing at the UPM's School of Computer Science, where he has worked as a full-time professor and researcher since 1989. He is also the R&D Director of the Centre of Computing and Communications Technology Transfer (CETTICO), and leads the Information and Communications Technology Research Group at the UPM. He worked at the Ministry of Education and Science's data processing centre as a software engineer from 1971 to 1989, holding the positions of head of group, head of studies, manager of the scientific department and director of the software analysis and programming division. This he combined with part-time lecturing in computing at the UPM from 1971 to 1989. He has authored or co-authored 15 books on programming and software engineering and over 60 papers published in journals and international conferences. Prof. Alonso has been a member of the New York-based American Association for the Advancement of Science and is an active Member of the IEEE. Prof. Alonso received the "Best Application Paper" award for the paper he co-authored presented at the IEEE 2001 International Conference on Data Mining.
