Short Biography
Javier Soriano holds a B.Sc. / M.Sc. in Computing (1996) and a Ph.D. in Computer Science (2003) from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). He is Associate Professor (Professor Doctor) at the UPM’s School of Computer Science, Spain, where he teaches both undergraduate and postgraduate courses on Computer Networks, Services-Oriented Computing, Middleware and Distributed Systems. Javier has been the Academic Secretary of the School of Computer Science (2003-2008) and acts as Vice-Dean for Academic Development (Head of Studies) since 2008. He also co-leads the Computer Networks and Web Technologies (CoNWeT) Lab., is a member of the UPM’s Information and Communications Technology Research Group and is a founder member of the Center for Open Middleware (.COM) recently created by UPM, Banco Santander, ISBAN and PRODUBAN. He also collaborates with the Center for Computing and Communications Technology Transfer (CETTICO) and is a founder member of the Quality Management in High Education and Universities (GICA) Innovation in Education Group (2006).
Javier is author or co-author of over 50 journal publications and conference articles, and has co-authored 9 books (one having won an academic prize) and 5 book chapters. He currently chairs and is a member of the Organizing/Program Committee of a number of renowned international conferences (including WWW2009, http://www2009.org) and uses to referee articles for a number of international conferences. His main research interests include Service Oriented Computing, Cloud Computing, Web technologies, Middleware and Ontologies for Web-based systems. In these fields, he has been involved in over 25 national or European projects and has acted as the UPM's principal researcher of several nationally and european funded competitive projects, including FP7's FAST, 4CaaST and FI-WARE. He has supervised 3 Ph.D. dissertations in the last 3 years and is currently co-supervising 3 PhD students from the Computer Networks and Web Technologies (CoNWeT) Lab. Javier is a Senior Member of the IEEE (http://www.ieee.org), the IEEE Communications Society, the IEEE Computer Society, and the IEEE Education Society. He is also Member of the Spanish Software and Services Initiative (INES Technology Platform, http://www.ines.org.es/) and the Networked European Software and Services Initiative (NESSI Technology Platform, http://www.nessi-europe.com/), having contributed to the development of the NESSI Strategic Research Agenda as a member of its Steering Committee.
